MICF Review: Corey White: The Cane Toad Effect (Performances Through April 19th)

“Don’t worry, you’ll get home in one piece” Corey White assures, as he delves into things he could have possibly said to put a woman’s mind at ease after he realized he had accidentally been following her for several kilometers late one night. Ultimately he knows there’s nothing he could have said, he knows even in his best intent that any confrontation with the lone walker would have resulted in heightened fear rather than reassuring comfort. One of his many personal experiences with the cane toad effect – where the purest intentions can result in an unwanted outcome.

His debut MICF show The Cane Toad Effect sees White open up about a particularly brutal upbringing, sifting his accounts through the Plato concept that no man does what he considers to be evil, as he reflects unwavering compassion in the face of the murkiest times in his life.

His ability to shine humour on the darkest corners of his existence is nothing short of impressive, his experiences are some that many people would never recover from, let alone be able to construct an introspective, intelligent, and down right brilliant hour of comedy around. I don’t know many people who have dabbled in ice that go on to quote Greek philosophers. Then again I don’t know many people that have done ice. I’m just safely assuming at this point.

It doesn’t matter what topic White touches, he never once lets the audience feel sorry for him for more than a fragment of time before bringing out a philosophical and uplifting perspective. Intelligent and wide-grinned against the depths of a life coated in poignancy, White doesn’t choke on the past as he coughs out a potato gem of comedic genius that’s honest and pensive. Your sides may split from laughing at his pivotal, oddly-timed epiphany’s, but don’t worry, you’ll get home in one piece.
