Interview: Son of Jaguar on what they hope to get out of Festival of the Sun next month

Hailing from the Coffs Coast, Son of Jaguar know a thing or two about hitting the tour circuit in Australia hard. Having already supported the likes of The Bennies, The Hard Aches and The Living End, the group have earned a solid reputation as a killer live band, fusing garage rock with melody and punk sensibilities that are tailor-made for the festival stage. It’s quite handy, then, that Son of Jaguar are hitting up Festival of the Sun next month, no?

Get an introduction and crash course on the band below!

Who are you and what band do you play in? What do you do in that band?

Hi, I’m Gary and I’m the singer in Son of Jaguar.

Today we’re talking about Festival of the Sun in Port Macquarie! Firstly, have you played it before. If so what were your experiences last time? If not what have you heard about the event and what are you looking forward to about it?

No, we haven’t played it before. I’ve heard it’s a pretty cool, laid back sort of festival vibe and the whole BYO concept and how that works is of great interest to us. Port Macquarie and where the festival is situated is a great spot too. Right on the beach!

Top 3 things you have to do at the beach, go!

Walking my dogs, swimming/surfing and drinking cold beer.

Top 3 things you have to do when camping! Go!

Sitting around a fire (probably not allowed), having a sing along around said fire, and drinking cold beer.

Specifically for those who aren’t familiar with your music, what can we expect from your set at FOTSUN?

Some sweat drenched, hip shaking, dirty rock n roll that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

What are YOU expecting from the crowd at FOTSUN and perhaps more generally the festival itself?

A really big (3000 guests!) chilled out party by the beach.

Are there any other acts yours excited to see? One stage = no clashes!

The Bennies as always; Bad//Dreems, they rock. The Preatures are cool; Ivan Ooze, he’s whack! Meg Mac‘s awesome! Everyone, really!

Tell me a little bit about 2017 to date for you / the band? What have been some of the highlights?

It’s actually been a bit quiet year in the number of gigs we’ve done. Our bass player Joe has been busy in his “other band ” (Grinspoon), doing a national tour a lot of the time. But we did manage to support The Living End/The Bennies a couple of times and also Kingswood recently. Plus we recorded and released our debut album King Hit and have written a whole bunch of new songs as well. So not bad, really.

Other than FOTSUN, what does the rest of the year hold for you?

After FOTSUN we’ll be taking it easy and prepping for the whole xmas thing, and looking to organise some gigs next year in the capital cities to promote the debut album.

King Hit, the debut album by Son of Jaguar, is available through Conquest of Noise here.

Festival of the Sun is happening in Port Macquarie this December 7th – 9th; the event is completely sold out!
