Heilung are heading back to Australia and New Zealand in March 2027 for a seven-date tour that includes two nights at the Sydney Opera House. They’ll also play Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl, Brisbane’s Riverstage, Adelaide’s AEC Theatre, Perth’s Red Hill Auditorium and Auckland’s Spark Arena.
If you’ve seen Heilung live, you know what’s coming. There are warriors in elaborate costume, ancient instruments, clouds of incense, hypnotic percussion and vocals that hit you square in the chest. It’s as much theatre and ceremony as it is a gig, and nothing else on the live circuit looks or sounds like it.
Since forming in 2015, Heilung have described what they do as “amplified history”. Drawing on the sounds, traditions and spiritual practices of early civilisations, they combine throat singing, haunting vocals, primal rhythms and dense soundscapes into music that feels thousands of years old.
Every show opens with an ancient prayer led by founding member Kai Uwe Faust. From there, Faust, vocalist Maria Franz and producer Christopher Juul take the audience deep into the ritual.
“With singing these primordial songs we want to give tribute to these cultures, reconnect to the beginnings and remember that we all, from East to West, from past to present, are connected through the exchange of ideas and inspiring each other,” Faust says.
There’s plenty happening in the Heilung camp right now. After a hiatus, they returned to the studio this month to start work on their fourth album. Before that arrives, Sagas lands on 11 December. It gathers 11 recordings made for and inspired by their work with Ninja Theory on the video game Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II. The new single “Læknisgaldr” is out now and shows off the project’s cinematic side.
German-American singer-songwriter Lilith Max joins Heilung at every show outside Sydney. Her dark take on folklore, mythology and fantasy makes her a perfect match for the night. Grab yourself a ticket – it’s going to be spectacular!
