Friday Fresh Five #007: LAZERTITS, Banjo Jackson, Timothy Nelson…

It’s starting to heat up now, with summer well and truly coming a-knockin’. To take us into this new November weekend, we’ve got some choice picks from Adelaide’s Banjo Jackson, and Jimmy Mountain, Melbourne’s LAZERTITS, Indian duo Parekh & Singh and Perth troubadour Timothy Nelson!

Banjo Jackson (Adelaide)

001banjo

Banjo was recently sharing the stage with Naomi Keyte and Olympia in Adelaide, which is where I remembered how much I enjoyed his music. A gifted natural when it comes to lyricism and delivery, he’s a bloody natural. Where we’ve seen other Adelaide lads like Timberwolf and Jesse Davidson come through and produce some awesome music in the same realm, Jackson is another member of the crop deserving of the spotlight too.

LAZERTITS (Melbourne)

001lztertitaI love these girls so much it friggin’ hurts. If you haven’t heard their new single “Boss Bitch”, then you’ve truly been missing out. Straight to the point, the song is a sharp call to arms for all the ladies out there gettin’ money or at the very least, tooting their own horn and getting shit done. She’s not bossy, she’s your boss.

Amen.

LAZERTITS play The Grace Darling in Melbourne on November 13th, have a suss of the Facebook event HERE. Head on over to the girls’ Bandcamp and cop some music too, while you’re at it!

Timothy Nelson (Perth)

001timothy

Timothy has had a pretty fruitful few weeks, celebrating the release of his new record Words Like Young and winning the WAM Award for Best Keys/Synth Artist. He’s a favourite and well-established artist of the Western Australian music scene and while his work with Timothy Nelson & The InfidelsHigh Horse and The Kill Devil Hills have brought Nelson acclaim in the past, it’s this solo album that has really captured our attention recently. Rich and full of stellar songwriting, Nelson really nailed his art on Words Like Young – definitely worth a cheeky listen.

Jimmy Mountain (Adelaide)

001jimmy

Hailing from SA, this four piece roots/folk outfit have some strong, haunting vocals that easily capture attention. Slow burning music coupled with hardened and borderline drawling lyricism that shakes the listener, on previous songs like “Where Is My Horse” and “Hey You”, Jimmy Mountain really captivate.

INTERNATIONAL PICK

Parekh & Singh (Kolkata, India)

001prek

Parekh & Singh have a sound reminiscent to the pop stylings of Andy Bull, harnessing the quirkiness of Little Dragon and Animal Collective and bottling it up into a streamlined, suited up guise. Dreamy folk-pop is the name of the game and Parekh & Singh’s debut album Ocean is one heck of an introduction to some gorgeous progressions and sounds.

They’re currently signed to Peace Frog Records (home of Little Dragon and Jose Gonzales), and have been on high rotation with us this week. Check out one of their newest tunes in “Philosophize” below:
