Howlite (Melbourne)

Melbourne muso Alison Thom currently makes music as Howlite, drawing in a cool blend of folk sensibilities, synth, guitar and pop. Her debut EP, Reasons, is coming out next Friday, November 11th and in her new single “Storm Chaser”, we get another glistening example of the potential this talented individual currently wields.

Ziggy Alberts (Sunshine Coast)

Folk songwriter Ziggy has been touring Australia (as well as internationally) for years now, growing his career independently busking, road tripping and self-funding tours over the past five years. The Winter Gypsy (Adelaide)

This Adelaide six piece have been doing their thing since 2015 saw them come together from four separate acts. The harmonies the group bring to the table hint at Bombay Bicycle Club and The Middle East, while the soaring melodies and uptempo arrangements are just undeniable to turn your ear to. The band have been having a solid year already, supporting the likes of Harts and Tash Sultana and we can’t wait to see what 2017 has in store.

Hurricane Youth (Tasmania)

Described as ‘folk punk’, Tassie trio Hurricane Youth have only been doing their thing since this year but what we’ve heard? We dig. New single “Free Drink” has introduced us to a highly energetic band, not to mention some promising and dynamic songwriting skills. They’re still fresh, but Hurricane Youth have come out kicking with this one and hats off to ’em for it.

Hurricane Youth play the Good Rebel Festival in Launceston over November 11th and 12th. Keep up to date with Hurricane Youth HERE.

INTERNATIONAL PICK

Wyvern Lingo (Ireland)

Some cool Irish sounds also come our way today thanks to trio Wyvern Lingo. Their single (released at the beginning of the year) “Letter To Willow” caught our attention early on and with supports alongside the likes of James Vincent McMorrow and Hozier recently, it’s clear that the band are continuing to spur on the momentum. Wyvern Lingo have been drawing influences from the R&B, pop and alt-folk worlds in whipping up some catchy new sounds – they’ve most recently dropped a new live video of the band performing their track “Used”, have a peek below!
