Exclusive Video Premiere: Fountain Lakes “Cry Wolf” (2026)

Fountain Lakes

Naarm/Melbourne duo Fountain Lakes invite us deep into the forest with the haunting video for their new single, “Cry Wolf”, which we are delighted to premiere today.

Comprising Jac Tonks and Emma Heeney, Fountain Lakes create expansive, genre-spanning music shaped by rich textures, reverb and dreamlike dual vocals. Following the release of “Castaway”, the first taste of their forthcoming EP Junkyard of Lost Hearts, “Cry Wolf” finds the pair leaning further into the sparse, spectral and quietly unsettling edges of their sound.

Filmed among the towering Californian Redwoods of Victoria’s Yarra Ranges, the video was directed by Tonks alongside longtime collaborator Mick Stylianou. Beneath a cathedral-like canopy of ancient trees, Tonks and Heeney move between shadow and light as the song’s tension gradually builds.

The sheer scale of the forest is imposing, with the pair dwarfed by hazy, dark and shifting surroundings that move in sync with the recurring rhythm ebbing through the song’s bones. There is something distinctly cinematic about it all — atmospheric, mysterious and just unsettling enough to feel like the theme song to your next favourite Scandi-noir series.

Built around the pair’s interlocking vocals, “Cry Wolf” is a cautionary tale and a meditation on trust, consequence and the stories we choose to believe. References to lost confidence, absent friends and crying out too soon add to the song’s sense of isolation. At the same time, sweet spectral harmonies drift above electric-guitar stabs and a steadily gathering rhythm. Sparse, intimate and quietly intense, it feels suspended somewhere between warning and regret.

For the track, Fountain Lakes are joined by regular collaborator Nick O’Mara of Amarillo and formerly Raised by Eagles on electric guitar, Mark Monnone of Monnone Alone and formerly The Lucksmiths on bass, and Gus Franklin of Smallgoods and Monnone Alone on drums.

“Cry Wolf” was written during a weekend spent in a converted church in regional Victoria, where Tonks and Heeney worked on the material that would become Junkyard of Lost Hearts. The EP is due for release this August.

Following its arrival, the pair will travel to the Fish Factory Creative Centre in Stöðvarfjörður, Iceland, for a month-long residency to begin writing their debut album. It is a fitting next chapter for a duo with a distinctly adventurous creative spirit — journeying from deep beneath the shadowy canopy of Victoria’s redwood forests to the stark yet beautiful Iceland to take inspiration for their next chapter.

They will be touring with Badlanders in July – so get along if you can and support live music. All the dates are below.
