Exclusive Single Premiere: The Scary Jokes “Riptide” (2023)

The Scary Jokes

The Scary Jokes is the solo project of queer / nonbinary indie- & hyper-pop Pennsylvania-based artist Liz Lehman. We are thrilled today to be premiering “Riptide”, a track that examines the story behind the Diablo Cody-penned film Jennifer’s Body. The track explores the exploitation that the star Megan Fox has experienced in her acting career.

The dreamy ethereal vocals float above a persistant driving percussion. This is heavenly bedroom pop that swirls and shimmers above the darkness. Drawing inspiration from creative icons such as Kate Bush and Brian Eno, Lehman sought out analogue synths to help create the sound they had envisioned.

Explaining the background to the song, Lehman states: “I thought it would be kind of fun to write a song about Jennifer’s Body. So I included some references to the movie, but I also got caught up in how frustrated I was for Megan Fox during the release of the movie, and also throughout her whole career—how much abuse she’s faced, and how she’s been taken advantage of. So I channeled that same feeling of frustration into the song.”

“Riptide” will be on Retinal Bloom, the upcoming album from The Scary Jokes, which will be released on the 26th May. The track (and album Retinal Bloom) was produced by Fire-Toolz (aka Angel Marcloid).

In the meantime, enjoy our premiere of the celestial “Riptide”, ahead of its release this Friday, 12th May 2023.
