Exclusive Single Premiere: The Inadequates “Genevieve” (2025)

The Inadequates

At the AU, we’re big fans of folk music, and a relative newcomer on the Australian scene is the trio The Inadequates. The Meanjin/Brisbane-based trio have made a splash at festivals with their high-energy, bright outfits and complex arrangements. We’re thrilled to be premiering just their third single, the bittersweet “Genevieve”, ahead of its release on Thursday.

“Genevieve” is essentially a breakup song, but that rather grim news can be lost in what is a whirlwind of intricate and enthralling instrumentation. There is some top-level folk going on here. We’ve got beautiful mandolin, acoustic guitar, accordion and double-bass.Throw in emotive vocals and sweet harmonies, and this is a masterclass in indie folk-pop that hits from multiple directions.

Making up the trio is Lawson Mackriell, Marcus Church, and Jackson Church. Helping out on this track was Benja King on double bass. Their debut single “The New Sensation” was only released in July, but having performed extensively live over recent years, they hit the recording studio as a fully-formed trio. The level of musicianship here is absolutely gold class.

The Inadequates are to release their debut album, Haven’t You Heard?, on Thursday, the 28th of August. They have some shows lined up in September, kicking off in Canberra on the 13th. All the dates are below, with more to be announced. Make sure you get to a show if you can. You can be sure to find them in some colourful and dressy embroidery, delivering their trademark high-energy performance. Not to be missed!

Enjoy this premiere of “Genevieve”, and be sure to pre-save it HERE.
