Exclusive Music Video Premiere: MAIDS “Girl Power” (2016)

“I don’t think we’ve ever met before, but I feel like I know you so well. There’s something in the way you talk; when you move your lips, move your lips.”

Ladies, you know this type of line. In fact, there’s a chance you’ve probably heard one far worse from a guy at some point during a night you’d rather forget. It’s this sleazy, over-confident nature some men project onto women that Newcastle rockers MAIDS have made the topic of their latest single, “Girl Power”.

Drummer and vocalist Sean Cook delivers the opening lyrics of the song in the official music video for “Girl Power”, premiering with the AU today, looking straight down the camera, eyes fixed. The lyrics may be firmly tongue in cheek, but in the riffs and relentless percussion of the single, it’s clear that MAIDS aren’t messing round when it comes to throwing down one hell of a loud rock tune.

When “Girl Power” was released, Cook was open about the origins of the tune, explaining,  “It’s a story about a girl rejecting a man harassing her in a nightclub. Girls are often sexually objectified, particularly in hip hop, and I wanted to poke fun at the sleazy nature of a lot of men”.

We’ve been loving this band for some time now and have been loving the direction MAIDS are continually pushing themselves down, musically, too. Check “Girl Power” out for yourself below!
