Can we call Cut Copy iconic yet?
Given that “iconic” has become a nonsense filler word, I think it’s worth reclaiming it for these hard-working musos.
I first saw the synth-pop outfit at Splendour in the Grass’ famous British invasion back in 2007. I’ve seen them 7 times since and still consider them one of the best Aussie bands to emerge in the Purple Sneakers era (IYKYK etc). I’m far from alone. Their tours are always in huge demand, both here and overseas, and a long absence hasn’t really dulled their popularity.
The four-piece has announced a short Australian tour in support of last year’s critically acclaimed Moments, not only bringing them back to Sydney’s Enmore Theatre after a very long absence, but also putting them up at Golden Plains Festival, Byron Bay’s Beach Hotel, and Melbourne’s Live at the Gardens series at the Royal Botanic Gardens.
While their sound has evolved dramatically over the years, it’s always a percussive blend of guitar work, disco-pop and Dan Whitford’s whimsical vocals. Throw in some lasers, everyone crying to “Out There on the Ice”, and a whole lot of optimistic songs and you start to understand why Cut Copy still hold plenty of weight over the hearts and minds of Australian gig goers.
