For many of us, “Big Jet Plane” was the song that made us fall in love with Angus & Julia Stone. They’ve taken a few detours since, with solo records and Angus’s Dope Lemon project, but there’s still something about the music these siblings make together that keeps us coming back.
Following the release of their ARIA #1 album Karaoke Bar, the pair have announced The Highway Karaoke Roadhouse, a new project of covers of some of their favourite songs. The first release is OneRepublic’s “Apologize”, with more to follow over the coming months.
Their version is a hushed, atmospheric one, built around those closely intertwined vocals, and it brings the sadness of the lyrics to the surface.
“We’ve been lucky enough to hear people all around the world doing their versions of our songs, too. And while doing press for Karaoke Bar, we held some really fun karaoke events with fans and got talking about everyone’s favourite songs to sing. The Highway Karaoke Roadhouse felt like a fun way to share some of our own favourites.”
And “Apologize”?
“It’s one of those pop songs that gets stuck in your head, but when you really listen to the lyrics, it’s deeply tragic,” they say. “That feeling of knowing you’ve reached the point where you can’t go back.”
