Team Fortress 2‘s Gun Mettle update adds contracts, weapons, maps and more

Valve’s free-to-play shooter Team Fortress 2 has received its latest annual update, called the Gun Mettle update. It arrives this week and will bring a pile of new weapons, three fresh maps, new taunts and a brand new contract system to the game, in addition to a number of tweaks to all eight classes.

The Gun Mettle event will run for the next three months, allowing players to accept contracts, skill-based challenges that can be completed for one-of-a-kind weapons. These weapons (with their various degrees of rarity) can then be kept, traded or sold.

In a bit of a break from tradition, if you would like to participate in the Gun Mettle campaign then you’ll need to grab a campaign pass for US$5.99. Valve have posted a lengthy and very helpful FAQ to tell you all about how the campaign will work and what you get for your money.

Everything else in the update, however, is free as usual. Fans can jump straight into the new official Capture Point map called Powerhouse, and three brand new community maps the jungle-themed Borneo (Payload), Japanese-flavoured Suijin (King of the Hill) and Snowplow (2-stage Capture Point Attack/Defense). A whole bunch of taunts created by the community have also been added to the game, including The Box Trot which is sure to please the Metal Gear Solid fans in the audience.

This is the tip of the iceberg in terms of changes and tweaks to the game. The full list of changes and patch notes can be found on the Team Fortress 2 official site.
