Confirmed: Activision really did buy MLG, wants to create its own eSports TV channel

You may have seen a rumour spreading around the web like wildfire yesterday regarding a potential all-in purchase of long-running eSports streamer Major League Gaming and this morning that news was confirmed via the New York Times. The piece was apparently part of an official announcement that had been embargoed by the publisher. Activision’s CEO Bobby Kotick was fairly straightforward in his comments, stating that his aim is to bring the ever-growing world of elite competition gaming to conventional television.

“I have a simple vision for this,” he told the paper. “I want to build the ESPN of video games.”

We wish him the best in this sizeable endeavour, but acknowledge just how uphill of a climb that way be. While we’d be happy to find eSports on our TV’s, the average Joe is still probably going to take the footy over StarCraft II. We hope they can figure it out.
