Nine Days share the 5 craziest places they’ve heard “Absolutely (Story Of A Girl)”

It’s been 25 years since Nine Days‘ “Absolutely (Story Of A Girl)” first wormed its way into our ears, with a new generation of listeners falling in love all over again when it appeared in the Oscar winning Everything Everywhere All At Once, reimagined by songwriter John Hampson.

To celebrate this massive milestone – as well as the anniversary of their breakthrough album The Madding Crowd – Nine Days will tour Australia for the first time later this year, with dates set for Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane.

Of the tour, frontman John said:

“We have been waiting 25 years for this opportunity! Over the years, fans from Australia have reached out to us wanting to know when we were going to make it there to play some shows. Well, now we can finally give them an answer – this November!  I collect all the cool things that Sony Records put out for the band, and I always loved the CD single they pressed back in 2000 that had some “bonus“ live and unplugged recordings we did in Seattle.

As far as I can tell, Australia was the only country where these CD singles were sold. For some reason, this fascinated me. This year we celebrate 25 years of The Madding Crowd album, and “Absolutely (Story of a Girl)” and I cannot wait to finally make it down under to hopefully meet some of those people who’ve been waiting for quite a long time to see the band; and if you happen to have one of those CD singles, please bring it with you. See you in November!”

Ahead of the tour, we asked John to share with us the five craziest places he’s ever heard “Absolutely (Story Of A Girl)” – but, before we get into it, here’s a little reminder of how it goes (not that we think you’ll need it).

1. In line at the supermarket deli getting ready to order a half a pound of turkey

That’s a bizarre moment. I looked around expecting everyone to start applauding, but they all just continued handling the produce. No applause.

2. At a baseball game in between innings.

People start singing along and again, I am waiting for applause that doesn’t come! I need to realize that I am only going to get that when I’m performing at a show!

3. At a bar with either a band or a karaoke singer performing the song.

That never loses its charm and wonder. I spent my teenage years in a basement playing other people’s songs, so this is the ultimate tribute.

4. Watching TV

I’ve been watching TV shows and was surprised when the song came on. Usually I am aware when a show or film is using any of my music, but I don’t watch much TV, so I’ve been pleasantly surprised when it appears in a scene that I have forgotten about.

5.  “Big box” home stores like Lowes and Home Depot seem to have us in high rotation.

I hear “If I Am” often in those stores. I bought a “fixer upper” cabin so I have spent WAY too much time spending money there to fix it up. Crazy? Not really, but it’s always a wonder and a thrill to hear songs that you’ve poured your heart into getting played in the most mundane of places.

I think the craziest thing about hearing it out in public is there is a part of me that expects everyone to stop what they are doing and look over at me in admiration and wonder. But mostly they don’t! That’s when it gets weird, haha!
