Creepers – Annandale Hotel (05.08.10)

All girl rock bands are not only few and far between in the current live music scene, but I think it’s fair to say that they’ve always been a rarity. Enter Creepers, a five piece Sydney band, made up entirely of talented females, two of which kick the shit out of the drums quite frequently. However, I doubt they’ll be singing about “Girl Power” anytime soon – rather, this is a band who share their tales on being “Bad Ass Bitches”. Touche.

Having caught the band a couple of times over the last few months, it’s been a thrill to see them develop into their own. “Flesh and Bones”, their second track of the night, featured a lovely dose of cowbell and felt well developed. Lead vocalist Laura Noir is a true find – she’s a rock chick through and through, with an amazing voice to boot. Think early Hole – except in this case the lead singer actually has sex appeal. Oh, now I feel bad for Courtney. I’m sorry!

Never ones to shy away from embracing their female appeal, the third track of the night was about shaking your titties – possibly the sort of stuff Courtney Love SHOULD have been singing about, rather than just whipping them out. Coming up fourth, was a track that seemed to borrow the riff from the famous Bill Murray song “Nothing But Star Wars” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53DQgbj2mIc), fusing it with a good dose of surf rock and heaps of bass guitar. I think “Sexy Jam” may have been the title. And it was good.

Later in the set, they revealed their theme song, “Bad Ass Bitches”. While much of the set was a new band still exploring their sound, style, strengths and weaknesses, this track definitely showed a band beaming with confidence and direction. A brilliant cover of the classic track “Time of the Season” closed out their set, which they followed with a fairly epic jam.

I’m curious to see the ultimate direction Creepers take – they’ve certainly heading down an interesting path, and if they play their cards right, they could definitely become a favourite of the Sydney scene. And let’s face it – who doesn’t want to hear beautiful women singing about shaking their titties and being bad ass bitches? It’s totally what Uma Thurman would do. All they need is a Pussy Wagon tour bus!
