Thursday

Muriel’s Wedding, GEM, 9:10 pm AEST

From the horrendous fashion to Muriel’s laughable obsession with ABBA, Muriel’s Wedding offers a hilarious yet equally bleak perspective on life in Australia in the 90s. Whilst Muriel herself may be “terrible” (according to her sister), this movie certainly is not.

Stacey Dooley in the USA, SBS 2, 9:30 pm AEST

In this episode, Stacey Dooley heads to Chicago – the murder capital of America – and meets the Hardman family, who are struggling to come to terms with the murder of their 19-year-old daughter. Sure to be an interesting and provocative watch.

Friday

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Ch. 9, 8:30 pm AEST

Excited for the final instalment of The Hobbit this December? Prepare yourself by reliving the magic of the first instalment. Stars Martin Freeman and Ian McKellan.

Saturday

The Whistleblower, SBS, 8:30 pm AEST

Inspired by true events, this drama stars Rachel Weisz as a Nebraska cop who takes on a peacekeeping job in post-war Bosnia only to discover a cruel reality of corruption and diplomatic double-talk. Compelling stuff.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of The King, GO!, 8:30 pm AEST

If you enjoyed the Friday night showing of The Hobbit, tune into GO! this Saturday night to experience the final part of Peter Jackson’s celebrated trilogy and finally see Frodo part ways with that troublesome ring. An epic ending to an epic series.

Calling all music fans! Produced and directed by Dave Grohl, this documentary recounts the history of famous recording studio Sound City in Los Angeles, the birthplace of classic albums such as Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours and Nirvana’s Nevermind.
