Uncertainty and mystery lurks for Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt in Passengers‘ debut trailer

The first official trailer for the anticipated film Passengers, a romantic science fiction adventure starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt, has been released.

The trailer depicts a future where humanity has made great advances in space travel and space transport. The Spaceship Avalon  soars silently through the emptiness of space on its 120-year voyage to a planet called “Homestead II”.

The spaceship is transporting 5,295 people within sleep chambers to the new planet so that they can start a new life. During the voyage, a malfunction occurs in two of the sleep chambers and two people are woken up. They are stranded on the enormous spaceship, with 90 years left on their voyage, and are unable to return to hibernation. Now, they must come to terms with their situation and try to uncover why they were disturbed.

Passengers feels a bit like 2001: A Space Odyssey with a hint of The Shining (mainly because of the unsettling bartender, played by Michael Sheen). The trailer evokes the feeling of uncertainty and mystery. The characters do not know why they have been awoken but they know it was not by accident…

Check out the trailer below.

The film is being directed by Morten Tyldum, who is known for Headhunters and The Imitation Game, and written by Jon Spaihts, who was the co-writer on Prometheus and the upcoming Doctor Strange.  The film is scheduled for release in Australia on 1st January 2017.
