TV Review: The Feed Season 2 Episode 8 – 20th February 2014 (SBS2, Australia)

Thursdays come around so quick eh? And with it comes the week’s last episode of The Feed. This episode took a slightly different approach – with a core focus on the third anniversary of the Christchurch earthquake (yes that was somehow three years ago).

Before that though- we were treated, if that is the right word, to some truly staggering footage of what’s happening in the Ukraine right now. The protests and the reaction to them have damaged the formerly beautiful Kiev beyond recognition. We can only hope a peaceful resolve is reached soon. This was followed with more powerful footage- of Russian punk rock heroes Pussy Riot. The band were only able to apply their trademark balaclavas before Sochi Cossacks whipped them with belts and sprayed them with pepper gas… The fact that this band continues to do what they do after all they’ve been through is powerful and always worthy of coverage.

The core of the night though, was a moving and impressively presented piece on the Christchurch earthquake. Firsthand accounts from survivors were juxtaposed against an utterly heartbreaking account from a family who lost a 21 year old son. These personal stories are always what drives the reality of any tragedy home, and it’s really wonderful of the family, the Thompsons, to come forward and relive such horrible memories.

Thankfully, things ended on a more amusing note, with the regular douche of the week segment, which this week had a corporate focus. Coca-Cola, Chevron and News Corp were all well deserving of their nominations to say the least!

It’s difficult to be able to recommend a ‘best’ night of the week to catch The Feed, with Lee Lin Chin only appearing on Mondays and the Douche of the Week segment featuring on Thursday nights. But really, this is a great problem to have with the show.

Review Score: THREE AND A HALF STARS (OUT OF FIVE)

The Feed airs Monday-Thursday, 7:35 (repeated 10:30) on SBS2
