TV Review: New Girl – Season 3 Episode 8 “Menus” (USA, 2013)

NewGirl

We’ve really got to give kudos to New Girl for still coming up with the quirkiest plot ideas without getting too off-track or repetitive. This was a really solid episode, ticking all the boxes for amusement, development, and character airtime – Coach and Cece included. That being said, in the aftermath of last week’s episode, it did feel a touch more pedestrian.

Coach appears to have slotted himself back into the household, taking over Schmidt’s old room in addition to Schmidt’s peculiar desire to psychically train Nick. Although Nick gave some real effort in his attempts to work out, and did actually get a fair way with it with the aid of Britney Spears’ Work Bitch, he ultimately proved that you just can’t teach a dog new tricks (and also that nothing is worth giving up Chinese food for).

Winston, meanwhile, is still being showcased as the background comic relief character. This isn’t so bad, as he always seems to end up with the most humorous, farfetched plotlines. An ankle injury and a wheelchair he found in a ditch proved the entertainment for this week’s episode, although still no mention of Ferguson the cat. In all honestly, I’m getting mildly worried.

Over to Jess, who was being her usual teacher-who-cares-just-a-bit-too-much self, taking out her work frustrations on a poor Chinese restaurant. Admittedly, they do seem to deliver half of the menus they print to Nick, who will happily accept them. Still, a not-so-morally correct message was delivered in the end and all turned out well.

As for character development, it’s nice to see Nick and Jess going strong with hopefully not too many bumps in the road ahead. Who knows, we may just have a television couple on our hands that will actually go the distance. Apologies if I just jinxed something. The final scene on the beach reminded us what this show is all about, just a bunch of good friends being ridiculous together. It really notched the episode up for me, especially Schmidt shooing the children away from a fallen Winston so he himself could throw sand over him.

Review Score: THREE AND A HALF STARS (OUT OF FIVE)

New Girl airs in Australia on Channel Ten.
