The Rock and Roll Cinema Festival kicks off at Golden Age Cinema & Bar

Kicking off last night with a screening of the seminal Rock’N’Roll High School, Golden Age Cinema & Bar in Sydney is featuring rock stars on screen – from triumphant concert films to tragic turns, turned up to eleven.

From the new Whitney Huston documentary, Talking Heads live in concert, to cult classic Dogs In Spacethere is something for every music and movie lover. Here is the full list of screenings:

Whitney: Can I Be Me (2017)
This new release, directed by Nick Broomfield and Rudi Dolezal, follows the incredible and heartbreaking story of one of the most prolific and talented singers of the modern era. After doing the rounds at sold-out screenings as part of Sydney Film Festival, the moving documentary is back for a limited season.

Johnathan Demme & Talking Heads: Stop Making Sense (1984)
Saturday 1 July at 5.30pm

The greatest concert movie ever made, this beautifully restored version of award-winning director Jonathan Demme’s film captures the big-suited David Byrne and his art-rock group Talking Heads at the height of their prowess in a visually-inventive setting that continues to sear indelible images on the minds of all who see it.
Screens as part of a night celebrating the late Jonathan Demme (1944 – 2017), also featuring The Silence of the Lambs.

Rated ‘R’ Rockstars Date Night Duo – Dogs In Space (1984) and Sid & Nancy (1986)
Saturday 8 July at 5.30pm / 7.45pm

Sure, it’s nice to find someone that truly understands you but history shows that two wayward rock’n’rollers don’t always make a right. A very louche Michael Hutchence stars opposite Saskia Post in Richard Lowenstein’s Oz cult classic Dogs in Space, a film that focuses on a scuzzy sharehouse in Melbourne’s little band scene, inspired by actual post-punk band The Ears. Stay wild with Alex Cox’s much loved biopic Sid and Nancy about…well, you guessed it. Starring Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb.

Tickets now on sale at the Golden Age website.
