Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood headlines the 2019 Melbourne International Film Fest

Now in its 68th year, the Melbourne International Film Festival has announced an astonishing line-up for its 2019 season, boasting 259 feature films, 123 shorts and 16 virtual reality experiences, MIFF 2019 will include 31 world premieres and 160 Australian premieres all taking place over just 18 days.

It’s artistic director’s Al Cossar‘s first year in the driving seat, and he couldn’t be more excited:

“I am absolutely thrilled to share my first festival with Melbourne in 2019. Rich in its diversity, this program is a true celebration of cinema: promising countless adventures into the kinds of places and people, ideas and experiences that you won’t find at your local multiplex. With titles from 78 countries, MIFF 2019 gives you the world on film; and as one of the world’s largest showcases of Australian filmmaking, it’s a chance for audiences to celebrate our own stories, too.”

The real coup for the festival is the opening weekend screening of Quentin Tarantino‘s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, a movie that is both love letter to and euology for the Golden Age of American film. The movie will screen at the iconic Astor Theatre, in all its celluloid glory.

Other highlights include the opening night screening of acclaimed Adam Goodes documentary The Australian Dream, an all day Jeff Goldblum celebration, and the Awkwafina led Farewell, which will close out the festival.

VR has also been pushed to the fore this season, with an extraordinary line-up of experiences that put viewers firmly in the action, from the trenches of World War One and the trial of Walter Sisulu to a London council estate and the passenger seat of an Aussie taxi.

The Melbourne International Film Festival will run from August 1st to August 19th.
Full program details and ticketing information can be found on the MIFF website.
