Suicide Squad breaks opening box office records in Australia

Though critics haven’t been overly kind to the latest comic book blockbuster Suicide Squad (though our own writer had nicer things to say about it), fans of the DC franchise wasted no time in packing cinemas to see the film, breaking a pile of Australian box office records in the process.

Roadshow, who distribute the Warner Bros. Pictures film locally, said the film opened on Thursday and set a new record for a film’s opening day in August, taking home $3,213,153. This sits slightly behind the opening day of Batman V Superman ($3.41 million) and ahead of Civil War ($3.06 million) and Deadpool ($2.94 million).

Interestingly enough, it’s also the biggest opening day ever for a film starring Will Smith!

Suicide Squad is in cinemas now.
