Shimmerlands delivers an incredible program of outdoor cinema, music and culinary culture to Melbourne

The Melbourne creatives behind Shimmerlands have stepped beyond the usual realm of arts and culture festivals with an outstanding collaborative program between Shadow Electric and the University of Melbourne.

Now at the half way point, this two-month long festival has been wowing audiences with the stellar curation of films and live music acts night after night. But, this is not just another summer night at an outdoor cinema with food trucks and bands. This is an elevated concept aimed to collectively align elements of design, architecture, food and the arts to a sophisticated palate.

Creative Director Jay Rayner says the event was designed to bring something fresh to Melbourne this summer.

“The idea behind Shimmerlands is to create something new, internationally appealing and culturally relevant to Melbourne, and all within the urban gem of the University of Melbourne.”

Last night’s February programme launch was an opportunity to immerse yourself into the delicacies of some delicious food and beverages, all the while standing in a specially constructed pavilion of architectural and design fervour. The edgy concept behind it matched with gorgeous lighting was a standout and will no doubt travel the country and feature at many other festivals.

The four main precincts that Shimmerlands offer are The Pavillion, The Cinema, Live Music and the Food Quarter which allows us to be entertained all evening long. The outdoor cinema itself is something quite beautiful and serene as you sit in a deck chair in a sunken garden surrounded by tall trees and limestone buildings. It’s otherworldly and unlike any other outdoor cinema here in Melbourne.

Shimmerlands is on until February 26 with some amazing films and musical acts still to come. For tickets and further information on what’s showing when, head here.
