Australian queer drama Invisible Boys is heading stateside, with the acclaimed Stan Original finding a new home on Hulu in the United States.
The Disney-owned streaming service has acquired the Australian series through Banijay Rights, which handles its international distribution, giving the homegrown drama access to a significant new audience following its Australian debut on Stan in February 2025.
Based on Holden Sheppard’s acclaimed 2019 novel of the same name, Invisible Boys centres on a group of gay teenagers growing up in Geraldton, Western Australia, whose lives become increasingly intertwined after one of them is outed online.
Created and directed by Nicholas Verso, the 10-part series stars Joseph Zada, Aydan Calafiore, Zach Blampied and Joe Klocek, exploring sexuality, friendship and identity against a regional Australian backdrop where the boys’ desires for connection and freedom frequently collide with the expectations of the world around them.
The Hulu acquisition marks another significant milestone for a series that has continued to attract recognition since its premiere. Invisible Boys won Best Original Web Series at the IFFA Awards, while Allan Clarke’s Episode 7 screenplay, “Vigil”, earned the Television Series prize at the 58th AWGIE Awards. The drama has also received Peabody Award and AACTA Award nominations, including recognition for Best Mini-Series at the latter.
For Verso, the opportunity to take such distinctly Australian queer storytelling to an American audience feels particularly timely.
“Queer storytelling is having a moment, and it has never felt more important,” Verso said. “I’m thrilled that our horny, sweaty Australian contribution is coming to U.S. audiences. I can’t wait for viewers to fall in love with these messy boys and their journey towards strength, pride and compassion.”
The international expansion also arrives as Sheppard’s relationship with the screen continues to grow. His second novel, Yea, the Boys, is currently being developed for television by Australian production company Deadset Pictures.
Produced by Feisty Dame Productions and Asphodel Films for Stan, with major production investment from Screen Australia, all 10 episodes of Invisible Boys are currently available to stream on Stan in Australia.
In the United States, Invisible Boys will stream on Hulu and via Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers. A US premiere date is yet to be announced.
