Sunday night in California, the winners of the 21st Annual Critics’ Choice Awards were announced – as voted by the BFCA (Broadcast Film Critics Association), a group made up of approximately 250 television, radio and online critics. Like the Golden Globes, which is voted by the relatively smaller Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the event recognises the best in film and TV from the previous year. However this was the first year that both film and TV were recognised at the same time.
Aussie flick Mad Max: Fury Road was unquestionably the biggest winner of the night, scooping 9 of their 13 nominations – mostly in the slightly bizarre “Action Movie” categories and for the technical awards. However Director George Miller took home the Best Director trophy, beating out Todd Haynes, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Tom McCarthy, Ridley Scott and Steven Spielberg.
The Big Short – which is in Australian cinemas now – was named Best Comedy, with Christian Bale taking out best Comedic actor and it also won Best Original Screenplay. Amy Schumer won Best Comedic Actress for Trainwreck. She was also presented with the “MVP Award”. Watch her hilarious speeches below:
Spotlight won Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Acting Ensemble, Room and The Revenant matched the Globes and won Best Actress for Brie Larson and Best Actor for Leonardo DeCaprio, respectively. Jacob Tremblay also won best Young Actor/Actress for Room.
In the TV categories, Netflix’s Master of None won Best Comedy and Mr. Robot won best Drama in their debut years – the latter also taking out acting awards for Rami Malek and Christian Slater. Fargo won four awards, including Best Limited Series and three acting trophies. You can view the rest of the winners below.
