After its TIFF premiere, Christy knocks out a new year Australian theatrical release

One of the most talked about titles out of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival was the biographical sports drama Christy from acclaimed Australian filmmaker David Michôd (Animal Kingdom) and starring Sydney Sweeney in the titular role, one that generated Oscar buzz out of the festival last month; you can read our review here, where we noted the actress as the film’s “heart and soul.”

And now, following the news that Black Bear Pictures will be distributing the film in the United States from November 7th, Roadshow Films, in conjunction with Kismet Movies, have announced they’ll be releasing Christy across Australian theatres next year, January 8th, 2026.

Christy Martin (Sweeney) never imagined life beyond her small-town roots in West Virginia – until she discovered a knack for punching people. Fuelled by grit, raw determination, and an unshakable desire to win, she charges into the world of boxing under the guidance of her trainer and manager-turned-husband, Jim (Ben Foster). But while Christy flaunts a fiery persona in the ring, her toughest battles unfold outside it – confronting family, identity, and a relationship that just might become life-or-death.

Based on remarkable true events, Christy Martin’s story is one of resilience, courage, and the fight to reclaim one’s life.

Christy is scheduled for release in Australian theatres on January 8th, 2026.
