Box Office Report: Vacation checks in at the top

A couple of fresh titles have taken up the top two spots this week as a new batch of films enter the top 10.

National Lampoon’s reboot Vacation has taken up number 1 after a $1.6 million opening last week. It did $14 million in its opening weekend in the US making it the most successful opening of a Lampoons film to date. Time will tell if its mediocre reviews (like ours) will let it stay at the top.

Jake Gyllenhaall’s Southpaw trails closely behind, pulling in $1.5 million its opening week. The new Antoine Fuqua joint (despite some great reviews) hasn’t exactly set the world on fire, failing to crack $50 million in its 5 weeks in the US.

Hitman: Agent 47 hasn’t broken the video game film curse despite some not so terrible reviews (but also plenty of terrible ones). It came just short of a million in its opening week here but only made $8 million in the US.

The other newbie, Woody Allen’s Irrational Man has cracked the 10 with a $217,000 opening.

Trainwreck and Mission Impossible 5 are holding on at 3 & 4 respectively, still making over a million each while Fantastic Four continues on its steadfast decline – failing to crack half a million last week.

This week isn’t a blockbuster week but we could see a couple of films sneak into the top 10. The Meryl Streep led Ricki and The Flash, filled with terrific musical performances; Joel Edgerton’s directorial turn in the suspenseful The Gift, starring Jason Bateman; another all star cast in a romantic comedy with She’s Funny That Way.

All figures from The Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia and Box Office Mojo.
