Cinema goers around Australia hit the the cinemas hard on Thursday for the opening of Fifty Shades of Grey, with the film grossing $2,506,663 dollars at the box office. This gives the film the biggest February opening day of all time and the biggest ever opening day for an MA15+ rated film in Australia, surpassing the previous record holder, The Hangover 2.

The amount also surpasses the impressive opening day hauls for films such as Sex and the City, the first ever Twilight and Hunger Games movies and even Skyfall.

But this shouldn’t come as much surprise. The hype for this film has been massive. As of its release on February 12th, the premium screenings for the film had already been sold out for weeks. The film also screened earlier this week at the Chicks At The Flicks event which saw at least 20,000 women attend.

The opening day for the film represented a 74% market share of the Top 10 films at the box office, with the film screening at 277 locations, on 523 screens nationally.

For those that are “curious” and want to see the film today (Valentine’s Day), best advice is to book online before you arrive.
