Australian Box Office Report: Suicide Squad remains on top, Bourne slides to 4th place

Mixed reviews and Jared Leto critiques be gone, because Suicide Squad remains firmly in first place on the Australian Box Office report.  Whilst it didn’t do as well in its second week against its unbelievable performance in its opening week (where it earned AU $13,904,557), its takings of AU$5.9 million mean that it’s stronger than Jason Bourne’s second week on the charts.  Suicide Squad‘s takings in its opening fortnight, however, at AU$23.1 million, sit behind only Deadpool and Captain America: Civil War as the biggest opening fortnight releases for the year so far.

New arrivals to the top 5 are Mila Kunis’ answer to practical parenting, Bad Moms, and appetizers with existential crises, The Sausage Party.   The former ranked as the best-performing new release for the week, while the latter, an MA-rated animated film, did better in the USA, generating US$33.6 million in its opening weekend.

Jason Bourne is hanging in there at no. 4, with AU$1.88 million, a fine performance after 3 weeks in cinemas.  Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie  follows closely behind at  AU$1.41 million this week.   It’s a good result for the cult TV show’s cinema transformation, and will definitely continue to please its loyal fans.

This week sees the releases of Kubo and Two Strings, marking Matthew McConaughey’s debut in animated films, and The Shallows, starring Blake Lively and continuing to give Great White Sharks a bad rep.  For mature audiences, there’s also the premiere of War Dogs, the Bradley Cooper-produced, Jonah Hill-led comedy/drama about international arms dealers in Afghanistan.  The eclectic mix of film debuts in the coming week may shake Suicide Squad from its top perch.
