Westfield Hurstville welcomes a Taste of Shanghai with Lilong (Sydney)

Southern Sydney has been hit with a taste of authentic Shanghainese cuisine with the opening of Lilong by Taste of Shanghai, in Westfield Hurstville’s newly renovated rooftop dining precinct, an extension for the loved dumpling chain and a restaurant which takes its inspiration from the lilong alleyway neighbourhoods of owner Aaron Mi‘s childhood, who wanted to recreate that vibe in Hurstville.

“I never ate at home, I ate at my neighbour’s place”, Mi says. “I wanted to bring the lilong concept over to Sydney, and create a welcoming experience where it feels like you’re spending time in someone’s lounge room”.

The menu features new dishes unique to the restaurant, as well as some crowd favourites from Taste of Shanghai’s existing restaurants – Ashfield, Eastwood, and World Square. Fortunately, this includes Taste of Shanghai’s excellent signature dumplings.

Other dishes include the house-made xiao long bao, san choy bao, beef and baby celery dumplings and lamb and spring onion dumplings, both of which will be exclusively offered at Lilong as opposed to its sister restaurants.

The restaurant’s interiors were created by Giant Designs, who also designed the homely interiors of Taste of Shanghai at World Square, here aiming to capture the essence of laneway living on Westfield Hurstville’s rooftop, whilst the aged interior mirrors the traditional Shanghainese home. Contemporary pops of colour and lively graphics modernise the restaurant inside, and the two laneways with bamboo framing, hanging plants and hanging lanterns creating an intimate feel, too.
