Taste Test: Hot Cross Bun flavoured KitKat (only available in Melbourne)

Coming straight out of Melbourne’s experimental KitKat Chocolatory is a new special edition of the adaptable chocolate bars, created to celebrate Easter. It’s the most obvious choice for the beloved chocolate brand, but still quite unexpected: Hot Cross Bun KitKat.

Putting their own little twist on the classic Easter treat, and providing a nice alternative for the expected gift of chocolate over the holiday weekend, the KitKat Hot Cross Bun bar has been nicely done, the traditional crisp batch baked wafers and indulgent creamy milk chocolate kicked up a notch with cinnamon and ground nutmeg. The bars are flecked with currants and topped with a white chocolate cross to finish it off, and the result is pleasantly surprising.

The KitKat Chocolatory allows the brand to constantly redefine the chocolate bar with new flavours; some turn out great, some turn out quite average. This one falls into the former category. The instantly recognisable taste of a hot cross bun is captured well, with a strong hint of ginger and nutmeg spread through the palate. It’s very bready as well, which is far from what one would expect from an average KitKat. The finish is bit too heavy and rich compared to the lightness of some of their other flavours, but that’s to expected when you’re trying to reduce a hot cross bun to the flavour profile of a chocolate bar.

Unfortunately for the rest of Australia, this limited edition flavour is going to be hard to comes across for those that live outside Melbourne. It will be exclusively available from the Melbourne Central boutique store from today, Monday 20th March, with three options: KitKat Chocolatory Special Edition Hot Cross Bun bar (50g) for $6 each; KitKat Chocolatory Easter Trio (3 x 50g) for $18 (it includes other flavours: lamington, almond brittle, and salted caramel popcorn); and KitKat Chocolatory “Create Your Break” bar for $15. The “Create Your Break” bar is the signature option for the boutique store, where customers can design their own personalised KitKat bars from a choice of three premium chocolates and a changing selection of 16 premium ingredients.

The Hot Cross Bun flavour will only be available up until Sunday 16th April.
