Sydney is getting a two day sparkling Italian wine festival

Nowadays it seems like we’ve moved beyond just general wine festivals (oh we still have plenty of those) and onto curated programs of specific varieties. The latest niche wine festival to be announced is Bolle Italia, and the focus here is on good Italian sparkling wines, split across two days at Rushcutters Bay restaurant Bar Machiavelli.

Featuring over 100 Italian sparkling wines, the all-you-can-taste event is marked for the 9th and 10th of October, giving guests a chance to explore the reasons why Italian sparkling is a trend that won’t be fading anytime soon. Of course, you can expect a load of antipasto to help soak up all those bubbles.

Co-founder and organiser Marco Zaccariotto, who along with Heath Felton of Global Grapevine will stage this event, has an ever-growing thirst for Italian wines, born and raised with the godly liquid amongst the vineyards of Veneto, which is one of Italy’s most desirable wine regions. He graduated from Italy’s best known wine school, GB Cerletti, and has since settled in Sydney where he imports and supplies some of the finest Italian wines to the city’s top restaurants. Zaccariotto has put together a straight forward program which includes the following.

On the first day, Sunday 9th October, doors at Bar Machiavelli will kick open at 10:30am where sparkling wine lovers will have until 6pm to dip into an unlimited tasting of wines ($33pp) that reflect each Italian region, district, and terrain. Everywhere from Friuli to Sicily and Piedmont to Sardinia will be well represented.

The second day, Monday 10th October, will see the restaurant playing host to an exclusive six-course Bolle Italia Degustazione dinner ($145pp) from 7:30pm. It’s ticketed and capped at 140 people, taking place as part of Good Food Month with the aim to explore the five main sparkling wine producing regions of Italy through six dishes and eleven sparkling wines. Expect dishes like White Truffle and Osso Buco Risotto, and Quail stuffed with foie gras and porcini mushrooms. Nonstop Italian music from opera to mandolin music will complete the sensory experience.
