Seminyak’s AYA restaurant combines street art and Peruvian fusion cuisine in Bali

As we near the end of 2017, it seems Bali’s famous Seminyak neighbourhood is getting all kinds of new dining destinations. We brought you news of Sarong Group’s new steampunk-inspired Thai restaurant recently, now we turn our attention towards the newly opened AYA Restaurant. Coming from owners Juanjo Suárez, Christian Gastaldi, Marco Cueva and Rafael Sanchez, the new addition to Seminyak’s kinetic dining scene is a hungry blend of Peruvian-Asian fusion food with a bright atmosphere inspired by street art.

Renowned chef Marco Cuevas leads the kitchen, overseeing AYA’s energetic clash of street-food inspired dishes, thumping beats, and visual pops of colour. The aim has been to offer Seminyak locals and visitors a playful and affordable urban restaurant that sets a relaxed scene for exploring the unique Peruvian-Asian fusion.

“Our venue is a temple for the senses, with amazing food and drinks in a space that showcases creative minds from all over the world,” explained Sanchez, extolling the youthful atmosphere which has been shaped by designer Helen Milne towards the eclectic and dynamic world of street artwork. In many ways, this makes AYA both a restaurant and a gallery, with plenty of tactile surfaces and finishes credited to artists all around the world. A huge mural by well-known London artist D*Face is featured, as well as works by Banksy and Space Invader. All artworks are also for sale, and there will be a regular rotation of featured pieces.

A dedicated Ceviche Bar is included alongside the main kitchen, where signatures focus on raw fish dishes using locally sourced ingredients. Cueva has drawn on influences from the indigenous Inca population and elements introduced by Asian immigrants, meaning that there’s plenty of Japanese and Chinese twists on Peruvian traditions.
