Murray’s Food Store brings mac ‘n’ cheese pies and New York style bagels to Prahran (Melbourne)

Murray’s Food Store, a modernised throwback to the classic milk bar, recently landed in Prahran and has quickly built quite the loyal following. It’s not hard to see why either, with a menu that puts twists on classics as well as offers made-to-order juices alongside freshly baked pies and New York style bagels. Taking over the former site of a milk bar that was in the neighbourhood for an impressive 106 years, the fresh-faced eatery is set to provide locals and visitors with all kinds of exciting fare, including their much-talked about mac ‘n’ cheese pieces.

Retaining much of the character of the milk bar before it, Murray’s has a loving community feel to it with framed photographs hanging above an ornamental fireplace and feature wall crawling with colourful street art. Even the menu has been anchored firmly with a local sensibility, sporting bagels that have been named after surrounding streets, like the Murray which is filled with cured lamb, pickles, beetroot relish, pickles, gruyere and sauerkraut.

Owners Jeremy Gaschk (also of the famous Easey’s in Collingwood) and India Gauci are behind the business, livening the menu up with a sense for variety alongside Milk Bar essentials that also include handmade muffins and classic pick ‘n’ mix lollies. And then of course you have the aforementioned mac ‘n’ cheese pie as well as loaded shakes, a cheeseburger pie, and a special breakfast pie featuring a snag roll layered with smoked bacon, cheese, onion jam and a full cracked egg on the inside. Think of it as your typical suburban milk bar pimped up with a great sense of what locals want.

There’s also the retail aspect to it, functioning very much as a milk bar should with goods on sale such as eggs, cold drinks, cured deli cuts, cheese, and more.
