Launceston’s Grain of the Silos named Australia’s “New Restaurant of the Year”

It’s no surprise when the nation raves about a restaurant in Tasmania, the island state best known for its impeccable produce and the quirky festivals like Dark Mofo and Mona Foma. Usually that hype is focused in on Hobart though, so it’s refreshing to hear that Australia’s official New Restaurant of the Year, as crowned by Gault&Millau Australia, makes it home in Launceston.

The restaurant in question is Grain of the Silos, taking up prime real estate in the fascinating Peppers Silo Hotel which opened in June of last year, repurposing four abandoned grain silos into an imaginative luxury hotel.

Grain of the Silos, led by Head Chef Peter Twitchett (pictured above) and Food Director/TV personality Massimo Mele, was crowned the winner after Gault&Millau Australia evaluated more than 850 restaurants across all Australian capital cities and major regional areas.

“Grain of the Silos sits proudly in a patch of Tasmania which is brimming with good food and people who truly care”, said Peppers Silo Hotel General Manager Paul Seaman. “Our Chefs have met each farmer, each maker, and each talented Tasmanian who brings something extraordinary to the restaurant’s ever changing list of dishes”.
