Hotel Review: Hotel Jen Orchard Gateway offers quiet amongst a busy Singapore shopping district

Smack in the middle of Singapore’s shopping district, Hotel Jen Orchard Gateway offers comfort and relaxation after a long day’s exploring of the Lion City. Don’t expect to get out of your cab and get straight into the checking in, however. I’m not exactly sure what the ground floor is used for, but the actual hotel lobby is a quick elevator ride up to the 10th floor. Check-in was smooth and to my surprise: absolutely paperless, as the usual paperwork one would sign during check-in were all done on Microsoft Surface tablets. A different set of elevators took me to my room floor.

Fresh fruits alongside not one but two bags of mini iced gems were available for me to consume as I walked into the room. Their king club room felt like an open concept room with plenty of natural light flowing in.

From the door to the living space, no walls separated the bathroom area, so expect no privacy if you’re staying with a plus one. All hotel info, room service menu and guides to Singapore were available on the big TV screen on the wall, continuing their eco-friendly train of using less paper.

The desk sat next to a window and provided a travel plug, for those non-UK plug users who forgot to bring an adaptor, and even had USB slots for easy charging. Though when I needed to get work done, I opted for the little couch next to the window with a view of Orchard Road.

The bed was super comfy with what I can only describe as having clouds for pillows. Good luck dragging yourself out of bed. If you do manage to get yourself out of bed, various kinds of Nescafe are available in sachets for a quick dose of caffeine, as required.

Their swimming pool is probably the most zen part of the hotel (probably even the whole Orchard/Somerset area) and although the hotel itself is in the middle of a popular area, it was surprisingly quiet. The infinity pool overlooks the concrete jungle of the area with comfy beanbags all around. There seemed to be what I could only describe as a meditation area by the splash pool if one needs some quiet time. With a poolside bar at one’s disposal, it’s definitely the perfect place to wind down and watch the sunset, drink in hand.

Back on the 10th floor, breakfast was almost too much for me to handle, there was just so much choice. From waffles to daily noodle specials to eggs-your-way, there was something for everyone at this East meets West spread. And if you, dear reader, are anything like me, you’d jump right to the ice-cream bar. Yes, you read correctly, there’s an ice-cream bar at breakfast. Pineapple ice-cream still counts as pineapple, so that’s a fruit portion settled for the day, right?
