Hong Kong’s famous Yardbird is popping up in Surry Hills this weekend (Sydney)

Hong Kong’s Yardbird will be taking flight and landing in Surry Hills this weekend to co-run the kitchen at Harpoon Harry with the one and only Morgan McGlone. It’s the latest in McGlone’s “Friends of Harry’s” series which he launched shortly after he took up residency in the inner-city hotspot, bringing in the likes of pitt master Rodney Scott and Adelaide favourite Africola. Now, Morgan has looked to Yardbird and tapped co-founder and Executive Chef Matt Abergel to bring the “it” restaurant’s signatures along for a long weekend party on Sunday 2nd October.

For those who don’t know, Yardbird is a modern izakaya that is more famous for their chicken yakitori and Korean Fried Cauliflower. Since 2011 the restaurant has built a huge reputation, even ending up ranked as one of Asia’s ’50 Best Restaurants’ by San Pellegrino.

“My goal when cooking is to communicate the core flavour of each ingredient through very basic techniques”, said Abergel. “It’s not cerebral or emotional; it’s charcoal, fire, salt, and chicken. It is everyman’s food”.

The a la carte menu for the one-day-only event will include chicken yakitori, fried wings, KFC (Korean Fried Cauliflower), and rice cakes with furikake, dishes for which the bar have created a number of Asian inspired cocktails and brought on some Sake to help wash them down.
