Gelato Messina launches new flavour inspired by Wellington, New Zealand, for one week only

In what is one of the more unique collaborations Gelato Messina have offered Australia, the renowned dessert kings have teamed up with New Zealand’s capital city, Wellington, to create a Welly inspired flavour that will be available across all Messina stores for just one week. With the cheeky name of “Sweet As”, the very limited edition gelato is part of a joint campaign with Tourism New Zealand, Positively Wellington Tourism, and Destination Marlborough, titled “Inspired by Wellington”, which saw Messina founder Nick Palumbo fly to the capital of cool to adsorb everything the city has to offer and come up with a flavour inspired by the trip.

The city of Wellington has been on many travelers’ radars around the world as of late, having been voted ‘coolest capital in the world’ by Lonely Planet. I recently traveled there on behalf of the AU review to put that title to the test, during their massive Welly on a Plate festival, and was overwhelmed by how creative, playful, and stylish the city is. It seems Nick had a similar experience, as he has taken some of the most popular and common flavours from the city and the surrounding natural environment and worked them all into one very, very delicious creation.

The “Sweet As” dessert is a smoked peanut gelato, layered with lychee meringue, passionfruit and gewurztraminer gel. the AU review got to try it ahead of launch and can certainly vouch for the creation, with the thick, smoked peanut butter and the lychee being the strongest tastes towards the top, working towards the passionfruit which is more towards the bottom and is a refreshing finish.

“Wellington is a city I’ve wanted to visit for years. It has a unique feel and vibe, with its varied collections of art, hidden bars and restaurants, said Palumbo, “All these amazing experiences are surprisingly close and set against a beautiful back drop of Wellington Harbour”.

The Wellington and Gelato Messina collaboration is the first in a three-part series aimed at promoting Wellington, Wairarapa, and Marlborough.

The limited edition flavour will be available in Gelato Messina stores for one week from Thursday 12 November.
