F&L Guide: Five of our favourite Steaks in Sydney under $20

There was once upon a time where it wasn’t too hard to get a $5 steak in Sydney – it wasn’t the best steak in the world, but it was $5. Nowadays, finding a good steak under $10 isn’t even the easiest things in the world – but if you know where to look, it’s certainly possible. And here, with a mix of those steaks and ones just a couple of dollars more, are five of our favourite steaks in Sydney under $20. Go forth, eat your way through these steaks and be merry.

Porterhouse Irish Pub (Surry Hills)

Rump Steak – $16 with chips, gravy and choice of sauce.

Located on Riley Street in Surry Hills, this Irish Pub is definitely somewhere you want to be if you’re after a good, hearty (and cheap) steak. You get much more than you pay for with their Rump Steak which is only $16 and comes with a generous serving of crispy chips.

This place is an institution for the area and many around Sydney have grown up with a special place in their hearts for this homely venue. The hotel boasts one of the best value steaks you can find in Sydney at just $9.90. It’s always decently sized, always cooked to perfection, and always comes with those addictive chips.

If you purchase a drink, you can also nab one of these steaks for even less – $7.90. It comes with mash and your choice of sauce.

The Forresters (Surry Hills)

200g New York Strip – $18 with fries, mac & cheese, or mash; choice of sauce.

You can’t go past one of the most popular venues in Surry Hills if you’re looking for a reliable steak. They are always consistent here with their steaks, and the $18 200g New York Strip is no exception. You can choose fries, mac & cheese, or mash to go on the side as well as your choice of sauce.

The Rose (Erskineville)

350g T-Bone Steak – $10 with Chips and a bit of a salad; choice of sauce

Some of the best crispiest chips in Sydney, great sauces (perfect mushroom sauce) and a massive T-Bone, this may be the best $10 steak in Sydney. For those who aren’t fans of T-bones, a perfect Rump is available for $6 more, and there’s a Sirloin for $20. But you’d be a sucker not to give the T-Bone a go. Cheap, cheerful and delicious.

Dove & Olive (Surry Hills)

220g Black Angus Rump Steak – $9.90 on Wednesdays with Chips and a bit of a Salad; gravy. $15 other days of the week.

It mightn’t look like the biggest steak in the world, but the rump (pictured above) came without an gram of fat or gristle. Perfectly cooked, it literally melted in my mouth. Under $10 on Wednesdays and $15 the rest of the week, it’s a spectacular meal no matter how you look at it. The Dove and Olive also bring you plenty of beers to match with your steak and a pile of American BBQ sauces that can add it some extra flavour. Though the inclusive gravy is more than enough…
