Five things you have to eat in Hong Kong (and where to eat it!)

Today we take you to Hong Kong – a city for business, a city for shopping and (perhaps most importantly…) a city for FOOD. It’s hard to go wrong when it comes to a good meal in Hong Kong, but there are definitely plenty of highlights. Here, in no particular order, are five such meals we don’t think a trip to the city is complete without…

1. King Prawn Wonton Noodle Soup

We start off with the King Prawn Wonton Noodle Soup – a substantial step up from what you’ll experience in Australia (or anywhere else for that matter). We recommend Tsim Chai Kee for a particularly excellent dish. They are also famous for the “three topping noddle” which also includes a fresh minced fishball and freshly sliced beef alongside the wantons (pictured above). Delicious.

Where? Tsim Chai Kee – 98 Wellington Street, Central, Hong Kong

2. Baked Pork Chop Rice

The Hong Kong Cafe (“cha chan teng”) is full of a variety of fusion dishes, bringing East and West together in a unique way. Only natural for a former British colony. Our pick is the Baked Pork Chop, which is served a few different ways. Usually it’s a mouth watering chop over rice, which is then covered in tomatoes and cheese. Sometimes with an egg (just in case you missed breakfast).

Many Hong Kong cafés stay open late (3am late…), appropriate for a city that has a dinner and a supper, breakfasts, teas, lunches… some cafe’s even have a menu especially for the midnight snack. Check out this dish we got our hands on at around 130am. Spaghetti and Snowpeas in a soup, with BBQ pork hidden underneath. Served with a buttered roll and scrambled eggs. As you go.

Where? Cafe de Coral or Tsui Wah Restaurant – Multiple Locations

3. Yum Cha

There is no better city in the world for Yum Cha than Hong Kong – well so the locals will tell you anyway. And it’s very hard to disagree. Though you’re unlikely to find them running around on carts like certain places in Australia (it’s a “tick what you want” sort of system, generally), you’re definitely going to have some of the best Dim Sum you’ve ever feasted upon. Few dishes get better though than the Crispy BBQ Pork Buns at Tim Ho Wan. Worth the trip to Hong Kong alone.

4. Char Siu (BBQ Pork)

BBQ Pork doesn’t get much better than what you’ll find in Hong Kong. Sliced fresh, perfectly cooked and served with rice or dry noodles, often with some greens and a side soup. You’ll even get it at Disneyland!

Where? Pretty much everywhere. You can’t go wrong…

5. Egg Tarts

Oh man, it does not get better than an Egg Tart. And our pick in Hong Kong are the tarts at Cheung Heung Yuen. Crispy, fluffy, creamy… almost melts in your mouth. If we haven’t made you hungry, you’re not human.

Where? Cheung Heung Yuen – 107 Belcher’s Street, Kennedy Town, Western District, Hong Kong
