The following is part one of a food and drink journal that Brisbane band MTNS have been keeping exclusively for the AU review, as they’ve been touring the country on their Salvage EP Tour. The band kick things off in Perth…
PERTH – 01.02.2014
LA VEEN COFFEE & KITCHEN
After the arduous five-hour flight from Brisbane – Perth, all of us were need of some caffeine (except Tom, he drinks water). Forcing our way through the CBD, we attempted to find a spot at Jamie Oliver’s Kitchen – which was packed out at 2:00pm. Moving on, we stumbled across La Veen in a laneway next to the infamous Uncle Joe’s Barber. A quaint café with Proud Mary beans imported from Melbourne, a perfect place to rest.
BELASYSE
Situated on Shafton Lane, the Belasyse is a new tapas style restaurant and bar with alfresco and indoor dining. The story goes, that old mate Shafto was an English colonial settler. He had two lovers, one of them Belasyse, whom he was not married to. Although in love with Belasyse, he could not leave his wife. Bela died shortly after being denied from Shafto of a heart attack – the story though says she died from a broken heart (sad face).
Although the story is sad, you will not be left with a broken heart at the Belasyse. The unique courtyard atmosphere adds a European touch. The owner, James, warmly treated us and he recommended the pumpkin gnocci. Served inside an antique ceramic dish and rested on a lamb ragu – simply delicious and our pick off the menu. Went down lovely with a Little Creatures Pale Ale.
BRISBANE – 06.02.2014
BEACH BURRITO
Being our hometown, we know the places to hit. Our favourite place for Mexican (an essential before any gig) is Beach Burrito – one of 1000000 new Mexican places in Brisbane. They usually have different deals each night, and our night was a beer and two tacos for 15 bucks! Absolute steal. We recommend the pulled beef and the prawn tacos. I usually don’t opt for a seafood option with Mexican food, but they have this incredible mango chutney that compliments the seafood flavours perfectly. And Dos Equis over Corona’s any day. Get off that lemon flavoured water.
REVEREND’S FINE COFFEE
Easily our favourite café in Brisbane, Reverend’s know how to serve an experience for any coffee lover. With a variety of coffee beans, food, tea, cakes and assortments – there’s something for everyone. It’s also a definite bonus that the Reverend’s team are the coolest bunch of people. Our tip at the moment is the RIC – Reverend’s Iced Coffee. Served in a cocktail mixing glass, this cold pressed coffee is sure to quench your caffeine hit and thirst any time of the day. Banana bread with blueberries and espresso butter is a perfect partner to the RIC.
BYRON BAY – 07.02.2014
BYRON BAY BREWERY
When you’ve booked a show at a brewery, you know you’re going to be drinking beers for the night. Our recommendation is the pale ale, brewed on site. A refreshing ale with citrus hints – perfect for a warm humid night in Byron. The chicken parmagiana was not bad too!
GOLD COAST – 08.02.2014
PIGS & PINTS
As the name suggests, this place is famous for pork and beers. With so many options on the menu, we went for the sliders and Monteith’s pear cider. (I know, should have opted for a pint of beer but sometimes cider’s are just right). The pork belly slider and haloumi cheeseburger were our favourites.
Pigs & Pints is just one of the new gems popping up around the Gold Coast. I’m hoping the Coast soon won’t be known for it’s clubs and party scene on the tourist driven streets of Surfer’s Paradise. Other great places for food and drink are Justin Lane, Canteen and Black Coffee Lyrics.
