With Bastille Day rolling through Sydney (and the world) this weekend there’s going to be plenty of celebrations throughout the city geared towards all things French dining. And seeing as French cuisine is one of the most diverse and technique-heavy in the world, that’s not a bad reason to get out and eat your way through the many regions of the romantic European country. Of course you have the huge Bastille Festival currently going on down at Circular Quay and The Rocks, but Sydney’s best French restaurants are also finding their own way to celebrate. Enter Bistro Rex.

The beloved Potts Point bistro has designs to take diners on a completely gastronomic tour of the different regions of France, with their Le Tour de Rex program currently running up until 29th July. It’s a conceptual dining series that will focus on the main regions of the famed cycling event, La Tour de France, with a menu that complements the food and wine of each destination.

Head Chefs Jo Ward and Michelle Powell have carefully designed a menu that will evolve as cyclist’s progress through the country. The same goes for the wine matched to each dish by sommelier Josh Dunne, meaning you’ve got a huge range of delicate drops ahead of you, from wines of the North-West through to the bubbles of Champagne, hearty reds of the Rhone, and fine wines of Paris.

Dishes planned to rotate throughout the concept menu include a Coquilles St Jacques Gratinee served with artichoke puree; Fine Langres Tart with honey roast pears; Confit Duck with Toulouse sausages and pork belly; and Beef Shin Pithivier.

The best part is that they’ve kept this whole thing very affordable. Savoury dishes range from $26 through to $52, while desserts start from $15. Wine by the glass will range from $12 to $28. Each match will be available from midday until close for the entirety of Le Tour de France.
