Australia’s Game of Thrones inspired wine festival is back

Aptly described as the “comic-con of wine”, the unique Game of Rhones festival is set to kick off it’s Australian tour this month, marching straight through the six kingdoms from Perth all the way to Brisbane and even across the narrow (Tasman) sea to Wellington and Auckland.

Sticking true to what has made the event such a hit in previous years, the curated festival will once again feature a comprehensive showcase of wine varietals from the Rhone Valley, which means guests will be filling their cups with grenache, shiraz and mourvèdre among others, all sourced from some very fine national and international producers like Yarra Yering, Ministry of Clouds, Henschke, Shaw + Smith, Man O’ War, HEAD, and Yalumba.

Over 100 wines in total will be available at each event, ready for tasting and pairing with a great range of meat and cheese options, coming from food vendors unique to each city. Perth has the honour of hosting the launch event, which includes food from Pig Lebowski, a collaboration between Fromage Artisans and MasterChef’s Jessica Arnott. Melbourne will get the likes of Fancy Hanks, Mr Burger and Burn City Smokers; Brisbane will benefit from Gerard’s Bistro and Yarra Valley Dairy; and Sydney gets the excellent Tequila Mockingbird plus Bodega, La Bastide, and Yarra Valley Dairy.

Those who want to make the most of it should grab a Royal Pass ($105) ticket, which offers early entry into the event (from 12pm), a food voucher, one-on-one time with a sommelier and a glass of wine at the special Rhone Bar pop-up. General Admission tickets (entry from 1pm) are priced at $65pp. Each event wraps up at 6pm and guests are of course encouraged to dress up in their best Game of Thrones inspired costume.
