The Turtle Beach Recon 70 Headset is one of the most affordable and high quality options available

We’ve had the pleasure of reviewing plenty of Turtle Beach headsets over the years, including the Turtle Beach Stealth 700 Headset (Gen 3), the Turtle Beach Stealth Pro, and the Turtle Beach Stealth 500.

But this is the first time we’ve tried a wired headset with the Turtle Beach Recon 70. And after almost a month of using the headset, it’s safe to say that the Turtle Beach brand holds up to their high-quality expectations and delivers on a really great product.

Design

The Turtle Beach Recon 70 comes in up to 11 different colours (with a white version that is officially licenced by Nintendo), allowing users to match the aesthetic of their gaming setups or even just choose their favourite colour. I’ve opted for the black version of the headphones, which have a touch of dark grey lining on the extension of the headset and other details like the padded headband.

The overall look of the headset is also really neat and sleek, with touches of their logo embedded in and on the over-ear speakers, with the added bonus of the headset being quite easy to navigate, with the only control on the headset being the volume control wheel on the back of the left ear. The attached microphone on the left ear is also highly sensitive and is able to flip to mute when not in use, and doesn’t get in the way of any gameplay.

As specified on their website, the headset is actually as light as they say, weighing about 232g. So it never felt too heavy or felt like it ever weighed me down during long periods of time wearing them.

I also find that wearing glasses and earrings almost 100% of the time can affect the way the headsets feel for me personally, where they can either be too tight, or the foam cushioning is too hard and puts too much pressure on my ears to the point of discomfort. But I’m happy to report that the Turtle Beach Recon 70 is extremely comfortable with the cushioning on the ears and the headband feeling comfortable throughout longer gameplay sessions.

The wired connection also allows the headset to be designed for multi-platform use, with compatibility across Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC, PS5, PS4, and mobile devices through a 3.5mm jack, with the cable itself reaching 1.2m.

Performance & Functionality

Given that this headset is wired, it is pretty straightforward to use. You’re able to plug the Turtle Beach Recon 70 into almost anything with a 3.5mm connection, and the audio comes through incredibly clear, with the high-quality 40mm speakers (which just means the ability to deliver a proper balance of bass, midrange, and treble in the headset).

I was able to use my headset on both my PS5 and my Nintendo Switch (it’s also compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2, if you have one). I even tried it on my phone and my laptop to see how well the audio works with other non-gaming devices – and every time the audio came out loud and clear.

The audio from the microphone also comes out really crisp, with no feedback or delay. So absolutely no complaints here. And the fact that you’re able to just flip the microphone to mute any in-game chats is a huge plus.

Verdict & Value

The Turtle Beach Recon 70 Headset is comfortable, lightweight, has good feedback, the ability to connect on multiple platforms, and the capability of controlling the volume right on the headset.

All in all, it’s a great choice if you are looking for a simple wired headset for daily use. The ability not to have to charge another device is a really great benefit, but the real winner here is that the simplicity of the headset itself doesn’t compromise the high-quality audio and the clear microphone, all at a reasonable price.
