The range of electric toothbrushes continues to grow, seemingly by the day. While brands like Colgate, Oral-B and even Hismile are the popular options here in Australia, Oclean has decided to have a crack at the market. With Xiaomi as a parent company, there’s no doubt that Oclean is already providing great value for the amount of features you’re getting.
At A$229.95, though, the Oclean X Pro Digital electric toothbrush is certainly a premium option within this market, with a sleek design, fantastic battery life, touch display and in-depth companion app. While it takes a hit with the lack of pressure sensitivity, it’s still a great option for most people looking to take their oral hygiene to the next level.
Design
The Oclean X Pro Digital electric toothbrush feels sleek in terms of its design, yet solid in terms of its build quality. Available in Blue, Purple, Silver and Gold, each option features a speckled design that adds a unique flair to the body.
The package comes with the brush handle, one Professional Clean brush head, one Delicate Care brush head with softer bristles, a magnetic charging base, and a USB-A to Micro-USB charging cable. There’s no USB-A adapter included in the box, so it’s worth tracking one down when considering this before purchasing.
The toothbrush itself is relatively basic; simply push on your chosen brush head and you’re ready to go. The magnetic charging base is also easy to set up and comes pre-applied with double-sided tape so it can sit sturdily on your bathroom bench.
Just above the central button, you’ll even find an interactive touchscreen that gives you access to a range of brushing options, while keeping track of your brushing coverage. It’s a nice package that looks clean and stylish, and while it’s not overly interesting, it’s certainly nothing to complain about either.
Functionality
The Oclean X Pro Digital electric toothbrush provides up to 84,000 Movements per minute with the Maglev (or magnetic levitation) Motor, which vibrates a little faster than your average sonic motor for more efficient cleaning.
It even features an impressive 30-day battery life, which is initially hard to believe, but I think Oclean isn’t messing around. The 800mAh battery has proven worthy, as I haven’t had to recharge this since I’ve been using it, which at the time of writing, has been around 3 weeks.
The brushing experience itself is also fantastic. You’ll be able to choose between a range of brushing modes directly from the toothbrush itself, which changes the length and strength of the experience.
You can even create personalised brushing plans through the app, and access them via the Exclusive Mode directly from the toothbrush, which you can customise via the app. This even allows you to focus on things like brace cleaning and even gum massages as well asd your traditional teeth cleaning options.
The included touch screen is easy enough to use, and only requires you to swipe up and down between the desired modes, before pressing the power button to begin. Along the way, the display will show you a small diagram of your teeth, about the areas that need some extra attention, and a number below which represents an overall cleanliness percentage.
The only issue with the daily experience, though, is that pushing the power button begins the selected cleaning mode, regardless of what you think. If it’s an accident or you simply need to put the brush down for whatever reason, the X Pro Digital will count this as a poor clean.
Second to that, there’s no pressure sensitivity option to indicate when you’re brushing too hard. It seems strange if you haven’t used an electric toothbrush with this feature before, but it really does play a huge part in helping you brush correctly, as most people actually don’t realise they’re brushing much harder than they need to on a daily basis.
Software
Available on iOS or Android, the Oclean Care+ app allows users to get the most out of their brushing experience and dental hygiene with some detailed breakdowns on brushing habits, teeth coverage, and even the ability to customise their personalised brushing plan.
The app pairs with the toothbrush via Bluetooth, but even with my Bluetooth on and ready to go, it still took me a couple of attempts for some strange reason, which I can’t quite identify.
The app is split into three main tabs being the Health tab, the Device tab and the Me tab. The Health tab is your main hub for overall cleaning details and brushing feedback. The top section updates users with the Brushing Activity Clover, which breaks down times spent brushing that day, your overall cleaning score and brushing frequency.
Scrolling down, you’ll find a more detailed diagram of the mouth similar to the one seen on the toothbrush’s display, which shows you where you haven’t completely cleaned. In between these sections, the app’s little Oral Cleaning bot will also notify you of your brushing habits, like excessive horizontal brushing, rushed brushing or insufficient cleanliness.
The Device tab will allow users to see if their toothbrush is connected, check on battery life and even access certain settings like auto-wake mode, certain reminders like the area change reminder, which pulses when it’s time to move onto a new area of the mouth. You can even customise your modes here and adjust overall sensitivity and brushing length to your liking.
The final Me tab essentially gives you access to privacy and policy settings, which don’t affect the overall experience. It’s a passable app, but it initially feels a little awkward to navigate without explaining what and where certain features are.
Verdict & Value
Overall, the Oclean X Pro Digital electric toothbrush is a perfectly suitable premium addition to the market, complete with a premium build and finish, along with plenty of customisable features and breakdowns to promote a higher level of oral hygiene.
While the lack of pressure sensitivity holds it back from being the best, and the app is a little jarring to navigate at first, it’s still one of the better options available today.
