Brisbane’s SUNFLOWER are your ‘60s/‘70s groovers bringing back an electric rock-soul fusion. Fronted by Lawson Doyle and Kahlia Ferguson, this five-piece is growing from strength to strength which each single released.
Their buoyant debut “Better Days” showcases Lawsons rock vocals highlighted with the bluesy backing of Ferguson. “Get Yourself Together” quickly followed, demonstrating a more sun-stroked sound for the band, this time with Ferguson taking the vocal reigns. It blends sultry “ahhs” with the anthemic plead for a partner to stop messing around and to figure out what they want.
However, SUNFLOWER’s most recent single, “Thin Skin”, is their most impressive offering to date. Lusty, woozy and lavish, this track falls more on the ballad side of their collection and pays homage to influences such as Coldplay and Oasis.
It comes as a timely reminder to face adversity head on, only to make you stronger and that there are brighter days after the darker ones. As 2020 comes to a close, we can all nod along in agreement that the challenges we’ve been thrown have certainly made us grow for the better.
