Track of the Day: Sir Winston “Hollywood Hills” (2020)

Australian-born but New York-resident Sir Winston has a pumping new tune out for you, “Holywood Hills”. The song references a rather gnarly party where his girlfriend has taken some pills at a party in the Hollywood Hills, and the mayhem associated with that. Thankfully that’s a crisis not many of us have to endure. This is a follow-up to his 2019 release, “Everybody Must Dance”.

“Hollywood Hills” has an urgent frantic feeling to it, bluesy, rasping and howling. You can feel the panic of dealing with the crisis of party-pills gone wrong in his strident vocals. The screaming guitars and pounding tambourines all add to the maelstrom of the shit-storm he finds himself in.

It was recorded in Brooklyn, with the studio wizard Abe Seiferth (RAC, Car Seat Headrest, Yeasayer)

Sir Winston talks about the recording process. “The sessions were as crazy as the track. I wanted it to sound very organic. Hours went into tracking the simple organic sounds like the tambourine and the kick drum. You can also hear my boot banging on the floor of the studio in time with the kick drum. We tried so many different things – I wanted to hear the room in the track. Doing the Vocal was like an outer body experience! We also messed around with so many different synths and spent hours and hours on guitar tones – trying so many fuzz pedals and vintage amps.”
