Track of the Day: Shabazz Palaces “Chocolate Souffle” (2019)

Reliably experimental Seattle rap duo Shabazz Palaces are launching higher into space with the charmingly off-kilter “Chocolate Souffle.”

The new single, lifted from forthcoming album The Don of Diamond Dreams, is a quick follow-up to recent cut “Fast Learner,” but this time heading deeper into the weird and unearthly with strong flows of electro-funk and stream-of-consciousness raps. It has nothing to do with a chocolate souffle.

The complementary music video, directed by David Shield and James Nugent, is equally strange. Emcee Ishmael Butler is simply messing around with glitchy psychadelic effects on his phone’s camera. Gorgeous? As he says on the track, this is high-art and his phone really isn’t that smart.
