Track of the Day: Little May “As Loving Should” (2019)

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for indie rock duo Little May. They’ve just dropped their second album Blame My Body, they’re gearing up for tours across Australia and Europe (the latter as support act for The Rubens), and now they’ve released the music video for latest single “As Loving Should”.

Formerly a trio, Little May now comprises of founder members Liz Drummond and Hannah Field. The shift in dynamics following Annie Hamilton‘s 2015 departure forced the remaining members to reconsider their direction. On their latest work, the band say:

“Both of us had very different experiences whilst making this record […] We wrote these songs separately and together, and in the process there was fear, joy, freedom, denial, shame, love, acknowledgment, anger, acceptance, surprise and confusion. We both became aware of ourselves and each other a little more. We tried to make sense of the world during a specific time, and in our own ways. Some of these songs were written consciously, some were written unconsciously. We wrote them to self soothe, and to have a good time. We had an incredible time making this record.”

Stupid Genius, who also directed the video for Little May’s previous single “Apples”, took the reigns again with “As Loving Should”, with a clip that pays homage to 70s country and western vids, mixed with eerie psychedelic projections that play off the track’s darker undercurrents.
