There aren’t too many rising hip hop stars coming out of Arizona, but Phoenix artist Jaywop is set to wave the flag high for his city. Bubbling under the radar, the rapper turns in a single, “Big Bad”, touching on a hard-worker simply climbing his way to the top.
And top is most definitely where this young artist is heading. He knows his way around a melody, through which he weaves effortlessly, highlighting a style that perfectly fits with the preferred raps of this generation. But this is far from dumbed down, leaning more towards a staple which includes credible emcees such as L.A hotshot Buddy.
If “Big Bad” is a good indicator of what to expect from Jaywop further down the line, then keep your ears out as this spreads to all corners of the internet. It’s already been picked up on Spotify’s “Fresh Finds: Hip Hop” playlist, and that’s often the first step for listeners who want to cut through the noise and find their next favourite.
